Enneapterygius pusillus, commonly known as the highcrest triplefin or Minute Triplefin, is a fascinating species of fish that draws interest from marine biologists and enthusiasts alike. First identified by the German naturalist Eduard Rüppell in 1835, this small fish is a member of the genus Enneapterygius. The highcrest triplefin thrives in tropical marine environments, specifically in the 🌊 Western Indian Ocean, including the 🌊 Persian Gulf, the 🌊 Red Sea, as far south as northern Natal in 🇿🇦 South Africa, and extending eastward to 🇮🇳 India.

These fish are typically found in protected coastal habitats such as bays and lagoons within a depth range of 3 to 20 meters, although they are most commonly seen at depths less than 10 meters. They seek out silty sand or mud-based substrates near reef bases, often blending with stones and dead corals to avoid predators.

Reaching a maximum length of only 3 centimeters, highcrest triplefins are remarkable for their diminutive size. They possess a translucent body featuring four distinct dark bars. The upper part of their head displays a unique cream and green coloration, while males and females exhibit several distinct differences in appearance. Males are particularly noted for their highly elevated first dorsal fin, which can be more than twice the height of their second dorsal fin. This fin is a vibrant yellow, complementing the striking black shades on the males' chest and pelvic fins. Males also have vivid red corners of the mouth and deep blue eye spots located below their eyes. In contrast, females tend to be nearly transparent, with a brown stripe below their eyes and at the base of their pectoral fins.

The reproductive habits of this species are equally intriguing. Eggs laid by the highcrest triplefin are hemispherical and uniquely adapted for their environment, covered in numerous sticky threads that attach them securely to algae found in their nesting sites. Following hatching, the larvae are planktonic, meaning they drift in the water column and are primarily located in shallow, nearshore areas. This life cycle strategy enhances the chances of survival in such delicate coastal ecosystems.

The highcrest triplefin holds the distinction of being the first species in its group described from the 🌊 Red Sea, marking its significance in the scientific community. Its ability to blend into its surroundings and occupy niche habitats provides a fascinating insight into the adaptability and diversity of marine life in tropical regions. Substantial sea bottom dredging, resulting in changes of water flow and sedimentation rates, for industrial, infrastructure-based, and residential and tourism development along the coast have caused deterioration in most benthic habitats (Sheppard et al. 2010). For example, large number of desalination plants on the coast of the Persian Gulf leads to localized increases in temperature and salinity (Q. Alghawzi, D. Feary, and S. Hartmann pers. comm. 2014). It is not known whether or not Enneapterygius pusillus is directly affected by this coastal development, but due to the large-scale of coastal development throughout the Persian Gulf and given E. pusillus's habitat preferences, it's likely E. pusillus is impacted negatively in some parts of the region.
