Seagrasses represent the exclusive group of flowering plants that thrive in marine habitats. With approximately 60 distinct species, these fully marine seagrasses can be classified into four families, all falling within the order Alismatales. Originating from their terrestrial counterparts, seagrasses successfully adapted and recolonized the ocean approximately 70 to 100 million years ago.
