Pale Damselfish

The Pale Damselfish, also known as the 🇲🇻 Maldives Damselfish (Amblyglyphidodon indicus), is a small, vibrant fish native to the 🌊 Indian Ocean, including areas such as the 🌊 Red Sea and the 🇲🇻 Maldives. Typically reaching a length of about 8.3 centimeters, this species thrives in tropical marine environments and is commonly found in reef-associated habitats at depths ranging from 2 to 15 meters.

This species is notable for its distinct coloration and body structure. The Pale Damselfish sports a silvery hue that transitions to a yellowish-white on its belly and lower sides. Its back and the dorsal part of the head reflect a greenish tone, accented by a broad green streak on each scale. The fish also features dusky grey near the rear edges of the preopercle and the upper half of the opercle. Its fins vary in color, with the median fins being translucent to greenish-white, the caudal fin edges narrow and blackish, and the pelvic fins ranging from pale yellow to white. The pectoral fins are translucent but bear a small dark spot at the base of the uppermost rays. Their teeth are incisiform, arranged in a single row, with scaled suborbital and predorsal scales extending close to the base of the upper lip.

The Pale Damselfish feeds on zooplankton and floating organic material, indicating its adaptability to various feeding conditions within its reef habitat. Its habitat preference includes shallow waters, often dwelling on branching Acropora corals at both inshore and outer reefs. These corals, particularly their dead branches, offer ideal nesting sites for the damselfish. During breeding, these fish are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. They exhibit distinct pairing behavior, with males playing an active role in guarding and aerating the eggs to ensure their survival. The species demonstrates an allopatric distribution, meaning it rarely overlaps with the similar species Amblyglyphidodon leucogaster, except in the eastern Andaman Sea.
