Dascyllus abudafur, commonly known as the 🌊 Indian Ocean humbug, is a species within the family Pomacentridae, which includes clownfishes and damselfishes. This species is geographically distributed from the 🌊 Red Sea, along the eastern African coastline to 🇿🇦 South Africa, including the 🇸🇨 Seychelles, Comoros, 🇲🇬 Madagascar, and the Mascarene Islands, extending eastward to the Sunda Islands. Historically, Dascyllus abudafur has been considered synonymous with the Pacific humbug, Dascyllus aruanus. However, recent genetic and morphological studies have demonstrated significant differences between the two taxa, indicating their distinctiveness. Consequently, Dascyllus abudafur is not listed in FishBase under its own entry. The specific epithet "abudafur" is derived from the Arabic term "Abu-dafur Jabûd," which historically refers to this species.
