Brucecaris tenuis, commonly known as the Crinoid shrimp, is a translucent species characterized by two prominent stripes, with the upper stripe being shorter than the lower. Typically associated with various crinoid species, these shrimp exhibit nocturnal behavior and can reach a length of up to 3 cm.
Their exceptional camouflage abilities enable them to adapt their coloration to match their host, often displaying hues of yellow and orange. This adaptive coloring is essential for their survival in their natural habitats.
Crinoid shrimp are primarily found off the coast of 🇿🇦 South Africa, particularly in False Bay, at depths ranging from 10 to at least 30 meters. While they are likely endemic to this region, recent observations indicate that the species may also inhabit other parts of the world, including the 🇵🇭 Philippines.
These shrimp are often seen residing on their host, the elegant feather star (Tropiometra carinata), where they likely consume organic materials such as the wastes of their host.
