Dor’s Sole (Soleichthys dori) is a small flatfish that inhabits marine environments, specifically in areas of the ocean that are 1 to 10 meters (about 3 to 33 feet) deep. This fish reaches a maximum length of 10.6 centimeters (approximately 4.2 inches). It can be distinguished from closely related species by its distinctive color pattern of evenly dark bars and a snout that is longer than the diameter of its eye.

Originally thought to be Soleichthys heterorhinos, a species first identified in Ambon, 🇮🇩 Indonesia, Dor’s Sole was recognized as a separate species due to differences in appearance and anatomical features. It can be confused with a similar undescribed species from 🇫🇲 Micronesia but can be distinguished by its lesser number of lateral-line scales—ranging between 98 and 115—and 50 or 51 vertebrae. It is also distinct from other related species, such as Soleichthys multifasciatus from 🇮🇳 India and Soleichthys nigrostriolatus from 🇫🇯 Fiji, based on its coloration and specific anatomical details.

Dor’s Sole primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates, meaning it consumes small animals living on or near the seabed. The genus name "Soleichthys" combines Latin and Greek roots meaning "sandal fish," while the species name "dori" honors the late Menahem Dor for his significant contributions to the study of the 🌊 Red Sea fish fauna, including recording the first specimen of this species from the area.
