Pagurixus haigae is a species of hermit crab that falls under the family Paguridae, within the class Malacostraca and the phylum Arthropoda. This species was first identified and described by scientists Komai and Osawa in 2007. The typical size of Pagurixus haigae is about 1.4 centimeters (approximately 0.55 inches), and it is characterized by legs and claws adorned with interrupted brown lines.
Originally, specimens of Pagurixus haigae were collected from regions in 🇯🇵 Japan, 🇹🇭 Thailand, and 🇬🇺 Guam. The presence of this species in the western part of the 🌊 Indian Ocean was first documented in 2013, including its identification on Europa Island in the 🇲🇿 Mozambique Strait. Pagurixus haigae is among the numerous small hermit crab species within the Pagurixus genus.
This species carries scientific importance due to its role in understanding the biogeography of crustaceans in tropical and subtropical seas. It contributes valuable insights into the distribution of the Pagurixus genus within the 🌊 Indian Ocean.
