Kosugei Hermit Crab
Catapagurus kosugei
Catapagurus kosugei is a species of hermit crab first described by Asakura in 2001. It belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Crustacea, and class Malacostraca, within the family Paguridae. This species is a member of the genus Catapagurus, which comprises over 40 different species primarily found in tropical and subtropical seas.
Catapagurus kosugei reaches a size of up to 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches). It has distinctive orange-brown legs with a white-banded first segment. Like other members of its genus, it features stout and robust limbs and uniquely-shaped claws, which allow it to utilize various shells to protect its soft abdomen.
The biology, habitat range, and ecology of Catapagurus kosugei are not well-documented due to its rarity and limited study. Similar to other species in the Catapagurus genus, this hermit crab inhabits the seabed in tropical regions, leading a benthic lifestyle. Catapagurus kosugei was officially recognized as a species long after the Catapagurus genus was first established, and it contributes to the genus's variety by showcasing unique morphological characteristics.
