The Indo-West Pacific region extends from the 🌊 Red Sea to 🇿🇦 South Africa and Papua 🇵🇬 New Guinea, reaching northward to southern 🇯🇵 Japan and southward to 🇦🇺 Australia. This marine, reef-associated species inhabits depths ranging from 2 to 78 meters, frequently residing among algal patches on coral or rocky reefs, as well as on weedy substrates.

The first dorsal fin is characterized by four elongated spines. Known for its cryptic nature and outstanding camouflage abilities, this species is particularly challenging to detect.
