Overview
The Suzanna is where divers out of Hurghada learn to go inside a wreck. She is small, a twin-masted motor sailer of about 22 m, sitting upright on sand roughly 100 m off the beach, and her interior is simple enough that working through it is a training exercise rather than a risk. She was built as a dive charter called Excalibur and run by the Susanah Diving Centre, which is where the site name comes from; operators still list her as Excalibur, Susana and Suzanna. An electrical fire took her in Hurghada harbor in February 1996. El Minya lies 1.2 km north-northeast, the same harbor and the opposite kind of wreck dive: 32 m in current for experienced divers against 21 m on a training line.
Dive plan
Lying upright on open sand, she reads clearly from the outside in a single pass before anything else is attempted: hull, twin masts, deck. The interior is what most groups come for, and it is straightforward enough that the PADI Wreck Diver course is routinely run on it, with short penetration lines and obvious exits. The wreck is also dived at night, with road transfers from Makadi Bay to the beach. A torch changes the site completely, since almost everything living on the structure is small.
What to see
The wreck carries macro life rather than large animals. Scorpionfish sit on the plating and on the sand around it, matched to whatever they have settled on, and batfish hold over the deck in loose groups. Reef fish have taken the hull over as habitat, which is what any hard structure dropped onto open sand eventually becomes.
