World Fish Migration Day

May 23Worldwide
World Fish Migration Day celebrates the incredible journeys of migratory fish and the importance of free-flowing rivers for healthy ecosystems.

Why It Matters

World Fish Migration Day shines a spotlight on the vital role that migratory fish play in aquatic ecosystems. These remarkable species, such as salmon, eels, and sturgeons, travel vast distances between rivers and oceans, supporting biodiversity and providing food and livelihoods for millions. Their journeys are threatened by dams, pollution, and habitat loss, making the protection of free-flowing rivers essential for their survival and for the health of our planet.

History

The first World Fish Migration Day was held on May 24, 2014, organized by the World Fish Migration Foundation. What began as a regional effort in Europe quickly grew into a global movement, with events in dozens of countries. Every two years, the event brings together scientists, conservationists, and communities to celebrate fish migration and advocate for river connectivity. Starting in 2025, the event will be led by VENAE from the Netherlands, continuing the legacy of founder Herman Wanningen.

How to Get Involved

World Fish Migration Day is a call to action for everyone who cares about rivers and fish. Events range from educational workshops and river cleanups to fishway openings and community festivals. Whether you’re a student, scientist, or simply a nature lover, you can participate by attending local events, sharing stories on social media, or supporting river restoration projects. The next celebration is set for May 23, 2026, with the goal of inspiring global action to protect migratory fish and their habitats.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond raising awareness, World Fish Migration Day aims to foster lasting commitments from governments, NGOs, and industries to safeguard rivers and restore fish passage. By connecting fish, rivers, and people, the event highlights the interdependence of healthy ecosystems and human well-being. Every river opened and every fishway restored is a step toward a future where migratory fish can thrive and continue their ancient journeys.
