Overview

The Napoleon Area is a named stretch of the Small Giftun reef rather than a site of its own, on the exposed east side of the island 1.1 km south of Erg Somaya. It carries the name because napoleon wrasse are resident along it.

What to see

Napoleon wrasse are the reason the stretch is named. They are long-lived and strongly attached to one piece of reef, and a large male will hold the same run of it for years, so the fish seen here on one trip is usually the same fish seen on the next.
