# Cocktail Wrasse (*Pteragogus flagelifer*)

**Taxon:** Wrasse (*Labridae*)

The Indo-West Pacific region extends from the Red Sea to South Africa and Papua New Guinea, reaching northward to southern Japan and southward to Australia. This marine, reef-associated species inhabits depths ranging from 2 to 78 meters, frequently residing among algal patches on coral or rocky reefs, as well as on weedy substrates.

The first dorsal fin is characterized by four elongated spines. Known for its cryptic nature and outstanding camouflage abilities, this species is particularly challenging to detect. Males exhibit territorial behavior, and reproduction is oviparous with distinct pairing observed during the breeding season.

While the species is edible, it is generally considered to lack desirable flavor.
