## How to recognise it

A slim dolphin to 2.4 m (8 ft) with a long thin beak, a nearly upright dorsal fin and three bands of color down the flank. It is named for what it does in the air: a spinner leaves the water and rotates on its own long axis, up to seven full turns in a single leap, then lands flat with a crack that carries underwater.

Nobody is certain why. The leading explanations are that the spin throws off clinging remoras, and that the noise of the landing is a signal - a way of saying where you are to a spread-out group in poor visibility. Both are probably true; the behavior runs in bouts through a resting school and spreads from animal to animal.

The day and the night are two different lives. Spinners feed at night in open water on the mesopelagic layer, the mass of small fish and squid that rises toward the surface after dark, diving to a few hundred meters to reach it. At dawn they move into shallow sandy bays to rest, swimming slowly in tight formation with half the brain asleep at a time.

Those bays are the problem. Rest is not optional, the animals use the same few every day, and a boat full of swimmers entering one is not a visit but an interruption. That is why the best-known dolphin bays on this coast are zoned, with a core area nobody enters and hours when the animals are left alone.

**We do not support keeping dolphins in captivity.** These are animals that travel tens of kilometers a day, hunt in coordinated groups, hold societies with their own dialects, and stay with their families for life. A show pool reproduces none of it, and the noise, the chlorine and the boredom are not details - they are what kills them early. Many of the animals performing today were taken from the sea, and the drive hunts that supply them continue because the tickets sell. So do not buy one. No dolphinarium, swim-with-dolphins program or hotel show survives without paying visitors, and every one of them ends the day people stop coming.
