Worm is a body shape, not a family.

The animals filed under this heading are not close relatives. A flatworm and a Christmas tree worm sit in separate phyla, which is a wider gap than the one between you and a shark; you and the shark are at least both chordates, while those two worms parted company near the base of the animal tree. Keeping them on one page is a habit of language rather than of biology, and the catalogue keeps it because it is how people go looking for them.

What they share is a solution to the same problem. Long, soft, symmetrical down the middle, no limbs, a gut running end to end: that layout has been invented over and over in unrelated lineages because it is the best way to get through sand, mud, and the honeycombed interior of a reef. Anything that has to move through a solid instead of over it tends to end up worm-shaped.

Which is why almost all of it is out of sight. The bulk of the worm life on a coral reef is inside the rock, under rubble, or buried in sediment, and a square meter of reef framework holds more of it than the visible surface suggests. The ones divers actually see are the ones forced to put something into open water in order to eat: the fans and spirals of the tube worms, which serve as gills and plankton nets at once. They are also the quickest animals on the reef to vanish, and a passing shadow is enough.

Three groups sit here. Flatworms are thin bright sheets that glide over coral and are constantly mistaken for sea slugs. Annelids are the segmented worms, including the feather dusters and the Christmas tree worms embedded in living coral. Fireworms are segmented worms too, and they are the ones that will hurt you.
