# Orange Cup Coral (*Tubastraea coccinea*)

Tubastraea coccinea, commonly known as the Orange Cup Coral, is a breathtaking splash of color in the ocean's darkest corners. Unlike most reef-building corals that rely on sunlight and symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) for energy, this remarkable species is azooxanthellate. Completely independent of the sun, it chooses to thrive in the shadows, clinging to the ceilings of caves, deep overhangs, and shaded reef walls.

#### A Neon Bouquet in the Dark
During the day, this coral often retracts into its skeleton, but when night falls or when currents bring nutrient-rich water into its cave, it undergoes a stunning transformation. The colony, characterized by its tightly clustered and closely spaced corallites, blooms into a vibrant bouquet of bright orange tentacles. It uses these stinging tentacles to actively hunt and snare passing zooplankton.

#### A Rare Red Sea Gem
While Tubastraea species can be found in various tropical waters across the globe, encountering Tubastraea coccinea in the Red Sea is considered a rare and special treat for divers.
