Gorgonian corals in the family Subergorgiidae form large, prominent colonies, often named after the Gorgons of Greek mythology due to their branching, sometimes snake-like structures. These colonies typically develop as tree-like or fan-shaped forms, commonly reaching up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) in both height and width. Their branches vary from stiff and rigid to more flexible, displaying bright colours of red, orange, yellow, brown, and purple; variegation is often present within a single colony. The small polyps, each possessing eight pinnate tentacles characteristic of octocorals, are generally extended during the day and can sometimes contrast in colour with the colony’s branches.

Subergorgiids inhabit exposed reef slopes and walls, thriving in strong, consistent currents at depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters (16-130 feet). They are obligate filter feeders, orienting their fan-shaped colonies perpendicular to the prevailing current to efficiently capture plankton and organic matter with their extended polyps. The dense networks of their branches provide significant refuge for various small fish and invertebrates. These large, colourful colonies are conspicuous and commonly encountered on many outer reef areas.
