# Reticulated Nudibranch (*Goniobranchus tinctorius*)

#### Taxonomy and Identification
Goniobranchus tinctorius is a strikingly patterned nudibranch commonly found across coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. In older marine biology guidebooks and classic dive logs, this species is frequently listed under its former, widely known scientific name, Chromodoris tinctoria. Although taxonomists have since updated its classification to the Goniobranchus genus, it remains one of the most easily recognizable sea slugs due to its distinct markings.

#### Visual Characteristics
This species is characterized by a unique reticulated (net-like) pattern on its dorsal side. The pale, creamy-white mantle is completely covered in a complex web of deep red or burgundy lines. The outer edge of the mantle is framed by a delicate yellow or orange border, immediately followed by a scattered row of bright crimson dots. Additionally, its translucent rhinophores (sensory tentacles) and feathery gills feature elegant reddish-purple margins.

#### Behavior and Defense
Unlike many secretive nocturnal reef dwellers, Goniobranchus tinctorius is a diurnal species that actively crawls across coral rubble and rocky slopes in broad daylight. This bold behavior is supported by its vivid aposematic (warning) coloration. By feeding on specific marine sponges, the nudibranch absorbs their chemical defenses, rendering itself highly distasteful and potentially toxic to predatory fish.
