## How to recognise it

- narrow cylindrical shell, pale beige with faint darker lines
- two orange-brown spots at each end of the shell

A narrow, almost cylindrical cowrie in pale beige, marked with faint broken lines and, most usefully, a pair of orange-brown spots at each end. Up to 5.4 cm (2.1 in), and one of the species most likely to be found alive rather than as an empty shell, because it hides deep and comes out late.

The mantle is worth waiting for. It is translucent gray and covered in fine branched papillae that make the whole animal look like a piece of encrusted rock rather than a snail with a polished shell, and it can cover the shell completely in a few seconds. Under a torch the process runs in reverse, quickly.

Diet is broader than the grazing cowries: this one takes sponges and small colonial animals as well as algae. That puts it under overhangs and in crevices rather than out on open flats, and it is why the species turns up on night dives on the reef proper instead of in the shallows.
