## How to recognise it

- thick conical shell with heavy vertical ribs, gray to greenish
- sits in the splash zone, exposed at low tide

A thick gray cone with heavy vertical ribs, living exactly where nothing should: the splash zone, hammered by surge and left dry and hot between tides. The walls are heavy for a reason - this is armor against both waves and the sun.

Between tides the barnacle seals itself. Four plates close over the opening, trapping a pocket of seawater inside, and the animal waits out the exposure in its own small aquarium. When the water returns the plates open and the feeding legs come back out, and a rock that looked like dead stone becomes a field of sweeping fans.

On shores like these, barnacles are the animal that draws the line divers walk across and never look at. Their upper limit marks how far the splash reliably reaches, and the band they form is one of the cleanest visible records of what the sea does to a coast day after day.
