Mackerel sharks (Lamnidae) are a family of large, fusiform predators with powerfully built, countershaded bodies, typically dark grey or blue-grey dorsally and white ventrally. Members typically reach lengths between 2 and 4 meters (7-13 feet). They possess pointed, conical snouts, large eyes without nictitating membranes, and prominent gill slits. A strong keel is present on the caudal peduncle, supporting a crescentic tail fin, characteristic of these fast-swimming, pelagic animals, which are named for their powerful, mackerel-like speed.

These wide-ranging, solitary sharks are found in offshore waters and near deep reef drop-offs, typically from the surface down to 200 meters (660 feet). They hunt large bony fish, other sharks, and cephalopods. Mackerel sharks exhibit regional endothermy, maintaining a body temperature warmer than the surrounding water, which enables sustained bursts of high-speed swimming for pursuit of prey. Encounters are infrequent due to their solitary and wide-ranging nature.
