# Broad-Banded Pipefish (*Dunckerocampus boylei*)

Dunckerocampus boylei, commonly known as the broad-banded pipefish, is a marine species belonging to the family Syngnathidae.

This species has been documented in regions such as the Red Sea, Mauritius, and Indonesia, and is presumed to have a broad distribution across the Indian Ocean.

It typically inhabits coastal caves and crevices at depths ranging from 20 to 40 meters (approximately 66 to 131 feet).

The broad-banded pipefish can reach a maximum length of about 16 centimeters (6.3 inches) and primarily feeds on small crustaceans that reside on other fish species.

Notably, this species is ovoviviparous, with the males responsible for carrying the eggs and subsequently giving birth to live young.

The species was named in tribute to Bill Boyle, an esteemed underwater fish photographer whose work brought this species to the attention of the ichthyologist Rudie Kuiter.
