# Rosy Goatfish (*Parupeneus rubescens*)

**Taxon:** Goatfishes (*Mullidae*)

The Rosy Goatfish (Parupeneus rubescens) is a marine species associated with tropical reefs and is typically found at depths of less than 200 meters. The species can attain a maximum length of 43 cm, though a more common size observed is around 23 cm.

Exhibiting variable coloration, this fish may sometimes feature a distinctive black saddle on its caudal peduncle. It habitually resides on sandy substrates and in the turbid waters of coastal regions.

Geographically, the Rosy Goatfish is distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, spanning the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, extending southward to South Africa, including Struisbaai, and reaching eastward into the western Pacific. It is also present in the Southeast Atlantic, notably along the coast of South Africa.

The name "Parupeneus" derives from the Latin words "parum" or "parvum," meaning small, combined with "Peneus," the name of a river.
