# Garden eels (*Congridae*)

## Quick facts

- **Rank:** Family
- **Scientific name:** Congridae
- **Body shape:** Eel-like - Snake-shaped, no obvious tail fin - moray eels, snake eels.
- **Species listed here:** 4

## How to recognise this group

- slender body, extends vertically from sandy bottom
- tail anchored within a self-dug burrow
- upper body sways gently with the current
- live colonially, forming 'gardens' of many individuals
- retracts swiftly into burrow when disturbed

Garden eels are highly elongated, slender-bodied eels, typically grey or beige with species-specific patterns of spots, bands, or mottled markings. They grow to 20 to 60 cm (8-24 in) in extended length. Their common name derives from their appearance, as they live in colonies, emerging vertically from individual burrows in sandy substrates, creating the impression of plants sprouting from the seabed. When undisturbed, the majority of their body length remains visible, swaying gently in the water column.

These eels inhabit reef slopes and plateaus across sandy plains, typically at depths of 10 to over 60 metres (33-200 ft). Each individual constructs a permanent, mucus-lined burrow, into which its tail is firmly anchored. From these burrows, they filter-feed on passing zooplankton, orienting themselves into the prevailing current. Highly alert, they retract swiftly and completely into their burrows at the first sign of disturbance, only to re-emerge gradually when the perceived threat has passed.
