## Overview

El Fanadir North is a long sloping wall with a shallow lagoon behind it and coral blocks standing on the sand alongside. What runs through the whole site is cleaning: stations follow one another along the foot of the wall almost without a break, which is why animals that are otherwise difficult to approach hold still here.

## Location

Around 60 minutes from central Hurghada.

## Conditions

Workable in most weather, with protected moorings in the lagoon and along the west side. Suitable for every level and for training at any stage.

## Dive plan

The shape of the reef argues for a drift along the wall, and in settled conditions even the far north end is divable. Beside the wall a wide sloping shelf carries coral blocks over sand and ends at 20 to 25 m in a drop-off into deep water. The wall is the draw, its cracks and caves sheltering a wide range of animals, but the shallow ground is better than the deep.

One coral block at 12 m carries a cleaning station and is the single best photographic subject on the reef. The site is also among the most used night dives out of Hurghada.

## What to see

Bluespotted ribbontail rays rest along the base of the wall. Yellow-edged, yellowmouth and giant morays all swim free here rather than staying holed up. Sweetlips and goatfish school in numbers. Pipefish are plentiful enough to keep a resident population of stonefish, scorpionfish and lionfish fed, which is what makes this a macro site first. Octopus are common but hard to pick out, and are usually spotted only once they move.
