- Drift dive
- Great for macro photography
- Pinnacles

## Overview

Carless Reef surges steeply from the Red Sea's deep waters. It comprises twin immense pinnacles, bordered by a flat coral garden plateau. A gentle incline descends to a vertical wall that falls directly into the abyss.

## Location

Approximately one hour from central Hurghada.

## Conditions

Optimum weather is essential for this dive location, owing to its exposed open-water position and the absence of sheltered moorings. Prior experience is recommended, as the current can be quite strenuous. Observe the current closely; it is unpredictable and does not invariably flow 'from the north' as is often stated by many guides.

## Dive plan

The dive site's configuration allows for multiple diving strategies. One approach is to begin at the mooring and investigate the plateau, which teems with vibrant marine life populating the coral garden and pinnacles.

An alternate plan involves a drift dive originating north of the pinnacles, continuing along the eastern wall, and finishing the dive near the coral garden and the smaller southern pinnacle.

## What to see

Carless Reef's renowned characteristic is its abundant population of moray eels that often appear approachable to divers and are readily posed for photographers. The underwater ecosystem thrives, likely sustained by nutrient-rich currents that transport a concentrated food source, nourishing every organism in the food web. Sightings span from tiny nudibranchs to powerful tuna and various sharks. Early dive groups entering the water might even spot hammerheads.

## Species recorded here (4)

- Frigate Tuna (*Auxis thazard*)
- Giant Moray (*Gymnothorax javanicus*)
- Great Hammerhead (*Sphyrna mokarran*)
- Skipjack Tuna (*Katsuwonus pelamis*)
