## Overview

Abu Talha holds one of the better hard coral gardens in Sinai, and the coral is at its best between 5 and 20 m, which is the shallowest part of the site. Below that the hard coral runs down to 50 m in the centre, a sinkhole opens at 25 m off to the left, and a canyon of its own is entered at 20 m with its floor at 30 m. The ground outside falls away past 120 m.

## Location

North of Dahab, about 17 minutes by jeep from town.

## Conditions

Entry is through a small lagoon and only works at high tide. Low current and good visibility once in. The canyon and the sinkhole call for advanced certification.

## Dive plan

The lagoon entry sets the timing for the whole day, since at low water the site is closed. Once through, the coral garden between 5 and 20 m is the reason most groups come, and a dive that never goes deeper than 20 m sees the best of it.

The canyon is entered at 20 m and bottoms at 30 m, with technical divers continuing to 55 m. The sinkhole sits at 25 m on the left of the main slope. The site can also be run as a drift south to Abu Helal rather than as an out and back.

## What to see

The hard coral is the animal here: stacked, unbroken and covering the slope from the shallows down. Reef fish work over it in the usual numbers, and the interest of the deeper ground is structural rather than biological, the sinkhole and the canyon rather than what lives in them.
